Jude Lamb, a storyteller who delights in portraying historic Maine women of note, will portray Ann Jarvis Greeley on Thursday, November 6, at 6:30 pm (storm date: Thursday, November 13) at Norway Memorial Library. Jude’s story is appropriate for (and most enjoyed by) 12-year-olds through adults.
This story has a special focus on Women’s Suffrage. It not only tells about Ann Jarvis Greely, but also gives us a window into that time before and after the Civil War. Jude’s portrayal of Ann Jarvis Greely (1831—1914) describes Ann’s pursuits, including owning her own Millinery Shop on Main Street in Ellsworth, Maine, at the age of 20, and outlines her many causes and pursuits.
These include gaining the right for women to vote (she brought Susan B. Anthony to Ellsworth, Maine!), abolition of slavery, promoting the welfare of widows and orphans after the Civil War, and raising money to build a huge Unitarian Church at the head of Main Street in Ellsworth. Jude hopes that her stories may inspire others to look for remarkable Maine people from the past, and especially to dig into their own family histories for those amazing folks.
Jude is an Oxford Hills High School graduate (Class of 1969). She holds a degree in Human Ecology from the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, and lives with her husband, Rob Collins, (and their 25-pound Maine Coon Cat named Jack) in an old Maine farmhouse in Lamoine.
