Oct. 15,  Avast Ye! Thar’ Be Gold in Those Hills
Discover what a chicken has to do with gold in western Maine. Rubies and diamonds were popular with pirates but gold coins were the most useful treasure during the Golden Age of Piracy. Know the difference between Au and FeS2 so you do not get fooled with Fool’s Gold!

Nov. 12, How to Catch a Dinosaur by Adam Wallace
Everyone wants to catch a T Rex!  What was Chixchalub? Look at some real fossils and make a cool mask to bring home.

Dec. 10, Coal in Your Stocking with The Lump of Coal by Lemony Snicket
The grim realities of 18th Century coal mining and why you are lucky to be in school!  Make your personalized lump of coal to bring home.

January 14, Old Rock by Deb Pilutti   
Examine some cool  “old rocks” from Maine. Time travel back to the 1970s and take home  your very own pet rock!

March 11, It’s Elemental
Discovering the Periodic Table and very cool Bismuth “hoppers”- crystals that can only be made in a lab. Discover what precious gem cannot be made by scientists.

April 8, Florence Bascom, Marie Curie, and even Hypatia of Alexandria.

In honor of Women in History Month ! Meet some famous and sadly not so famous women geologists, astronomers, and paleontologists who broke down stone walls and more!

May 13,  Birthstones
Learn the history of why different months have different gems assigned to them. Why do some months have  more than one birthstone? Which birthstones can we find in Maine? Take home an art project designed around your birthstone!
