DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we remember Norway’s early history and honor the Revolutionary War veterans whose courage and service helped shape both our country and the beginnings of Norway. \nPresenters: Brad Cummings and Dennis Gray of Norway Historical Society \nProgram Highlights include early land grants and purchases\, veterans who settled in Norway\, graves in local cemeteries\, and place names recognizable today. There will be a “guess the weight of the cannonball” contest for a chance to win a copy of Woody Holton’s book\, “Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution.” The cannonball\, believed to be from The Battle of Bunker Hill is now a Norway Museum and Historical Society collection item and will be on exhibit at the Norway Memorial Library in September and October along with other early Norway artifacts.

DESCRIPTION:A Discussion of \nThe Greatest Sentence Ever Written \nby Walter Isaacson \nFacilitated by Ashley Towle\, PhD\, Professor of History and Women & Gender Studies\, University of Southern Maine \nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 \n6:30-8:00 pm \nIsaacson’s 80-page book focuses some of the most famous lines in American history\, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” and how they’ve endured and evolved since 1776. The book aims to inspire reflection on shared values and to frame the 250th anniversary of our Nation as a celebration of unity. \nThe first 30 registrants will receive a free copy and custom discussion guide. This program is supported by a grant from the Maine Public Library Fund. \nIt is a companion program to Norway Memorial Library is hosting the Maine Historical Society’s Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence on October 9 and 10\, 2026. \nThe broadside is one of only 26 remaining copies of the printing by John Dunlap on the night of July 4\, 1776 for distribution throughout the colonies letting the people know the Declaration had been signed. \nThis historic document is touring all 16 Maine counties to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of our Nation. \nTo see the exhibit in Norway\, visit https://www.mainehistory.org/revolutionary-maine-doi-norway/ and get your free tickets for Friday\, October 9\, or Saturday\, October 10\, 2026.

He will show how gravestones from the 1800s were inscribed and decorated with symbols to memorialize those who died before their time\, and he’ll share stories of Mainers whose lives were cut short by lightning\, shipwreck\, disease…even murder. \nRomano is a cemetery historian recognized as one of Maine’s leading researchers of its nineteenth-century gravestones\, symbolism\, monument makers\, and burial landscapes. He has written several books and multiple papers on these subjects. Ron has designed walking tours of twenty historic cemeteries. He offers classes in gravestone symbols\, family tree research\, and related topics through Adult Ed and speakers’ programs at public libraries and historical societies throughout Maine. He’s served on local and national nonprofit boards for organizations dedicated to preserving grave markers and cemetery landscapes\, including the Association for Gravestone Studies. He is the winner of the Forbes Award\, the highest honor bestowed by this association. Ron has been a guest on Maine Public Radio’s Maine Calling this summer. The book was favorably reviewed by The Bollard newspaper and in Troy Bennett’s History Jig Substack earlier this month\, and it is currently a best-seller at Longfellow Books in Portland. \nNorway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street\, Norway\, Maine.
