SUMMARY:Dale Ruth Sherburne Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dale Ruth Sherburne Author Talk \nThursday\, June 25\, 6:30 pm \nCaregiver advocate\, author\, and speaker\, Dale Ruth Sherburne will talk about her book\, Neither Wife nor Widow\, at Norway Memorial Library on Thursday\, June 25\, 2026\, at 6:30 pm. She brings a lived-experience perspective shaped by more than twenty years spent caring for her husband following his early-onset dementia diagnosis. \nThe book is a collection of personal stories that explore the emotional realities of caregiving for a loved one with dementia. Through dozens of conversational vignettes\, the author bares her feelings with raw\, unapologetic honesty. Stories range from humorous to touching to wrenching and shed previously unseen light on a caregiver’s mind. The caregiver’s heart will lighten knowing that “caregiver-land” has no room for judgment or guilt. \nSherburne’s work has been favorably reviewed\, including a book review in the Journal of Applied Gerontology (February 2026) and a Kirkus Book Review (December 2025). She is committed to improving caregiver health and quality of life\, and has a special interest in ensuring support availability for low-income caregivers and those in rural areas with limited access to services. \nSherburne is a Maine native who raised two daughters with her husband\, Russ\, in an 1850s farmhouse with a menagerie of beloved pets. Her degree in child psychology led to directing special education services for preschool children with disabilities. Nature and animals are her passions\, along with books\, crafts\, practical jokes\, spending time “upta camp\,” and finding joy among friends and family. \nThis program is free to attend and open to the public. Norway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street\, Norway\, Maine. Please call 743-5309 ext. 1\, stop by the Information Desk\, or e-mail norcat@norwaymemoriallibrary.org with questions.

SUMMARY:Dr. Shanee A. Stepakoff presents "Dreams Decoded: Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Insights"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Dr. Shanee A. Stepakoff as she presents Dreams Decoded: Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Insights \nThursday\, May 14\, 2026\, 6:30 pm at Norway Memorial Library \nDr. Shanee A. Stepakoff is a professional dream interpreter\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, writer/poet\, registered biblio/poetry therapist\, summa cum laude graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington (BA\, 2020)\, and currently a PhD candidate in literature at the University of Rhode Island. She will present a variety of dream interpretation methods used in ancient civilizations\, including those from Mesopotamia\, ancient Egypt\, ancient Greece\, and China. She will then describe a range of contemporary methods for working with dreams in psychotherapy\, which she has used in her psychotherapy practice. These methods are primarily informed by Jungian theory\, but also draw upon a few ideas from Freud – some that she considers obsolete and others that she believes remain valid. Next\, she will discuss some commonalities and resonances between the approaches derived from ancient wisdom and those used in psychotherapy. She will then invite questions and discussion. The aim is to deepen and enrich our understanding of dreams and to explore some ways that working with dreams can improve our daily lives. \nNorway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street\, Norway\, Maine. For more information\, please call the library at 743-5309.

Co-Artistic Directors and performers Marguerite Mathews and Greg Gathers\, search out rich\, historical literary gems and bring them to life for audiences throughout the region. Their shows often feature antique stage techniques\, including rolling panoramas\, puppetry\, and toy theatre figures. Mr. Gathers creates all the props and sets used in the theatre’s productions. \nThe Flat Iron Lot was written by Alice Brown in 1899. Set in the fictional town of Tiverton\, NH\, it chronicles a rural New England community’s celebration of its 250th birthday. With fits and starts\, contention and compromise\, the residents organize historical reenactments\, a grand parade\, and speeches from civic leaders and the town’s beloved\, unofficial historian. In the end\, the townspeople enjoy a reinvigorated sense of civic pride and appreciation for their shared heritage. The story is an apt microcosm of the ambitions\, struggles\, and ideals of our national observance of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe Friends of Norway Memorial Library is a membership organization with a volunteer board of directors raising funds through membership fees\, used book sales\, and other efforts to enhance library programs and services. To join the Friends of Norway Memorial Library\, complete a membership form at the library. To learn more about serving on the Friends of NML board of directors\, speak with Beth Kane\, Norway Memorial Library director. \nFor more information\, call 207-743-5309.

SUMMARY:"Three Wheres and a Why\," a talk by Tom Hoffelder
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 16\, 2026\, 6:30 pm \nThree Wheres and a Why \nNorway Memorial Library will host “Three Wheres and a Why\,” a talk by Tom Hoffelder on Thursday\, April 16\, 2026\, at 6:30 pm. This presentation has grown from an article titled “Where did all these rocks come from?” in the Tulsa Rock & Mineral Society’s newsletter in 1998. It was rewritten for publication in other newsletters and then developed into a talk accompanied by PowerPoint slides. It was presented at the 2025 New England Mineral Association Meeting\, at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum\, and for the Oxford County Mineral and Gem Association. \nThe presentation has expanded to include more than rocks and the origin of the elements that make up our minerals.  Since humans are made up of the same elements\, logically\, the next question became “Where did all these people come from?” Then\, if discussing intelligent life here\, how can the possibility of the same elsewhere be ignored\, and “Where have all the aliens gone?” was added.  The final question is\, “Why are YOU here?” \nTom Hoffelder was raised on a farm in northeast Indiana. He received a BS in Aeronautical Engineering in 1969. He spent most of his engineering career at Pratt & Whitney\, a manufacturer of large military and commercial jet engines. He and his wife\, Lynn\, lived in Florida\, Oklahoma\, California\, and Connecticut before retiring to Maine. They have visited all 50 states\, driving to all except Alaska. \nThis event is open to the public and free to attend. Doors open at 6:00 pm. For more information\, please call 207-743-5309 or visit www.norwaymemoriallibrary.org. Norway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street in Norway\, ME.
